PLEASE NOTE (December 2024):
Be Happy Psychology will be closed over Christmas and New Year (19th December 2024 to 5th January 2025, inclusive). During this period, a timely response to your enquiries cannot be guaranteed. While you are able to email, text or leave a voice message, Jo and Ella (Office Manager) will be less likely to respond until Be Happy Psychology reopens.
Due to Jo’s lengthy, mid-year hospital stay (86 days) and two surgeries, she has reduced her workload, and is currently not working on Fridays and seeing less clients on the other days. Subsequently, there may be a longer wait for initial appointments. This limited consultation availability is also the reason that ONLINE BOOKING is NOT currently activated. As mentioned in more detail below, there is the option of being added to the WAITLIST to be contacted if an appointment becomes available prior to your scheduled one.
Generally, it is unlikely for Jo to be able to answer telephone calls, as she is often consulting with clients. Therefore, it is preferable to either email or text when contacting Be Happy Psychology.
Mental Health Emergency Contacts:
If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, contact The Mental Health Triage Service SA on 13 14 65; Lifeline on 13 11 14; Triple Zero (Ph. 000); or go to the 24-Hour Urgent Mental Health Care Centre at 215 Grenfell Street, ADELAIDE (Ph. 8448 9100).
Welcome
FACE TO FACE & TELECONFERENCE SERVICES
Be Happy Psychology offers Face 2 Face (F2F), teleconference & telephone appointments. Be Happy Psychology has a secure video conferencing system – a link will be sent to your email prior to your appointment and you simply press the link and you are instantly connected (there is NO requirement for you to download apps or put in passwords). All new clients, for their initial appointment, must be either F2F or teleconference.
Even though you may receive an SMS reminder stating you have a F2F appointment in the office, please contact Jo to change to a teleconference appointment, if at the time it is more convenient or you have cold/flu/COVID symptoms.
Be Happy Psychology is committed to providing clients with psychological care to assist them in finding positive life directions and improving their general psychological well-being.
“Take every opportunity to give a genuine compliment, do a kind deed, really listen, offer a smile, show appreciation or convey encouragement. It will have a positive impact on you and can potentially make an incredible difference to the receiver.”
Making an Appointment; Getting There; When I Arrive & What to Expect at the Initial Appointment
How to Make an Appointment:
Contact Be Happy Psychology: email, sms/text or leave a voice message, (I’m rarely able to answer the phone – as I am usually with clients and additionally, at present I am only consulting Monday to Thursday). Let me know what days/times suit you best and your email address. I’ll then contact you and offer you the next available appointment that may (but not guaranteed) suit your preferred days/times. As mentioned, currently I have limited near future consultation appointment spaces available. Although, each week or fortnight someone usually needs to reschedule, thereby creating an available appointment space. What Be Happy Psychology can offer to prospective clients, is to be given a future consultation appointment as well as, being placed on the WAITLIST, to be contacted if an appointment becomes available prior to your scheduled one.
I’ll then email you my intake form (please check your JUNK/SPAM folder), that can be completed and submitted on a smartphone; tablet; PC etc. A head and shoulder photograph will be requested in the intake form to add to your file (this photograph will NOT be shared or copied with ANY other person or organisation). You can upload your photo when completing the intake form OR Jo can take a photograph at your initial consultation. If you have any concerns, please discuss with Be Happy Psychology.
Automatic sms/text reminders are sent 3 days prior to your appointment. Simply reply with a Yes to confirm or contact me (reply sms or email) to reschedule/cancel. The phone number that the appointment reminder is automatically sent from is a number that can be reply texted from but NOT voice called (this number changes frequently and is part of my diary management software).
The number of consultations/sessions/appointments required and the duration between sessions can vary, depending on the presenting issue/s. Sometimes, because of being booked out in advance, there may be a greater amount of time between the initial and second appointment. The client can request to be put on my WAITLIST. Alternatively, some clients (particularly if they can only attend at specific times or days) will book a number of appointments in advance and if they do not need them, will reschedule or cancel. I also advise all my clients that if an issue suddenly arises and they need an appointment prior to their next scheduled one, they are welcome to contact me an request this, indicating when they are available for the coming week, and I will determine if I am able to ‘juggle’ my calendar, to fit them in earlier.
Be Happy Psychology consultations are approximately 50 minutes in length.
Getting There:
Be Happy Psychology at 19 Moseley Street is 200m south from Jetty Road, Glenelg. If using the Glenelg tram, take to the end (where the jetty/beach is), it is less than a 5 minute walk to the office. If you take a bus, Stop 22 on Moseley Street is closest to the office. If driving, there may be visitor car parks available on the right hand side of the office (corner of Katies Lane and Moseley Street, ignore the permit only signs which only become effect out of hours and on week-ends), alternatively there is free 2 hour street parking.
When you Arrive:
Come straight in the front door, (Be Happy Psychology does not have a receptionist), walk down the passage and take a seat. My office door has my name on it (it is the third door on the right). Feel free to help yourself to the water fountain. If you prefer, you are welcome to bring a hot drink into the consultation – there is a coffee shop – Superette – just two doors from my office towards Jetty Road. The toilet is down the passage, through the internal door at the end and on the right.
Initial Appointment :
At your initial appointment I will gather some general information and history as well as, explore what the client’s main issue/concern/problem may be, that is impacting on their ability to function in a manner they wish. Some clients will bring in notes (e.g. what they wish to say; what they want addressed or what they would like the outcome to be), this is welcomed. Sometimes clients don’t know what to say to the psychologist, this can be common and I will guide the session. Throughout the session clients are welcome to ask any questions. A flexible treatment plan may be developed where Jo uses evidence based therapies and techniques e.g. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)/ Mindfulness Cognitive Therapy/Relaxation Techniques in building strategies to assist her clients. At the end of the initial session the client determines if they wish to book a subsequent appointment, at a mutually agreeable available day/time. Then payment and Medicare/Health Fund rebate (if applicable) is finalised.
Ultimately, Jo aims to create a sense of empowerment in her clients. Clients are encouraged to be proactively involved and they are invited to provide feedback on their goals, treatment and progress.

Fees – Rebates – Reports – Letters – Assessments
A medical referral is NOT necessary to see a psychologist. Although, you may qualify to receive a rebate from Medicare (for a proportion of the psychology consultation fee), if your General Practitioner (GP) determines you are eligible to obtain a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP). A second option for a rebate is to utilise private health benefits (the amount will vary depending on the health fund).
Fees are guided by the National Schedule of Recommended Rates of the Australian Psychological Society ($315 per 50min. session*). My discounted full fee rate is much less than recommended.
As of July 2024, my standard fee is $195.00*. Fees need to be paid in full on the day of the appointment. Currently, the Medicare rebate that you will receive back (with a current Medicare MHCP) is $96.65*.
Family or Couples consultations take longer (usually 90min. session is required) and Jo needs to be made aware of this prior to the appointment. The current fee for these consultations is $300.00* – sometimes Medicare will not cover these types of sessions, your GP will determine if the situation is eligible for a Medicare MHCP and therefore a rebate.
Bariatric ASSESSMENT & other Plastic Surgery consultations are where a bariatric/cosmetic surgeon refers a patient to a psychologist, prior to a client having weight loss or other cosmetic surgery. Your surgeon may postpone surgery if this consultation is not attended. Therefore, as appointment spaces are often fully booked a few weeks in advance, it is advisable to make an appointment well before proposed surgery. In this consultation, you will be asked to complete some psychometric assessments and other information will be gathered, to assist the psychologist in writing a report for your surgeon.
These ‘Assessment’ appointments incur a fee of $250*, due to the extra time involved (i.e., scoring and interpreting assessments, and writing a subsequent report).
Bariatric & other Plastic Surgery SUPPORT (non-assessment) 50 mins consultations. A bariatric surgeon may not need an assessment report but may refer bariatric patients to a psychologist for support prior and or post surgery. These consultations are at the Standard consultations fee rate of $195*. They can assist clients optimally address any presenting pre- and post-surgery concerns, issues, or barriers and comorbid conditions.
Medicare may not cover these types of consultations, your GP will determine if the situation is eligible for a Medicare MHCP and therefore a rebate. Alternatively, private health can be used, although note that not all funds will cover psychology.
Be Happy Psychology practice offers Tyro/eftpos (including Medicare EasyClaim), and HICAPS/Health Point (private health instant claiming) facilities for payments. If payment is made via Tyro/eftpos machine, the Medicare rebate can be automatically (instantly) transferred into the client’s bank account. While payment can be made with credit or debit cards or via smart phone/watch pay, the Medicare rebate can only be transferred instantly if the client uses a debit/eftpos card. Otherwise, Jo will submit the claim online and the rebate will be processed and put into the client’s account 24-48 hours later.
For individuals who are National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) or Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) clients, or with Return to Work SA (RTWSA), or involved with Third Party Insurance Claims, the participating government department, support agency, legal firm or insurance company will be charged the current gazetted fee. If your claim is not accepted or does not include psychology sessions, you will be liable for the fee.
REPORTS / LETTERS / PSYCHOMETRIC ASSESSMENTS
Reports / letters / assessments are provided, if an official request is received from a third party, such as RTWSA and insurance or legal organisations. The third party must indicate if they are responsible for the fees or if their client is to pay.
Report / letter writing fees usually attracts GST and is calculated by the time it takes to write, current costs are based on the current (2024_2025) government gazetted rate of $242.24* plus GST of 10% ($24.40*) equals $266.64* per hour. A standard comprehensive report, that includes psychometric assessments, will usually take 4 hours to complete, with the cost therefore being $1066.56*. More information is available regarding overall costs and fees of reports / letters / forms.
If specific assessments are requested, for example IQ, ADHD or memory assessments or other educational tests, a fee can be negotiated. This fee is contingent on the types and number of assessments required, and the subsequent time needed to administer, score, interpret and write up a report.
*Fees current as of July 2024
Be Happy Psychology DOES NOT do letters / reports / DSP applications / administer assessments etc. for:
*Centrelink
*Child Custody/Family Court
*Paedophilia or Child Abuse Legal Issues
or other issues (case by case) that may be in conflict with Be Happy Psychology’s standard ethical regulations or current clientele.
About Jo
I am a registered psychologist, having worked in both public and private sectors (solely in my own practice since 2011). I provide psychological treatments for a broad range of issues and have always found it very easy to build rapport with a cross section of the community (I love my job). I am comfortable and capable of counselling adults, children & couples.
In my practice – Be Happy Psychology – I consider myself to be non-judgemental, treating every client as unique and therefore tailor treatment to the individual. I know from experience, that a particular treatment (therapy / strategy / technique) that may work well for one client, may not be the most effective style of treatment for another client, with a similar presenting issue or condition. That is why when providing techniques or strategies to clients, I understand that sometimes they may not work in that particular client’s ‘world’. Therefore, I provide clients with a variety of appropriate ‘tools’, teaching them how to practice and implement those tools for different situations in their ‘world’. The hope is that these tools will assist clients in ameliorating the negative impact of their psychological symptomatology. My aim for all clients, is to hopefully enable them to better manage their issues / worries / problems / conditions in the most optimal manner and ultimately move their life in a positive direction. In turn, possibly allowing them to experience more moments of happiness, contentment, peace, satisfaction, empowerment and joy.
